The Prescribed Fire Project Coordinator will coordinate projects within the Guild’s fire management program in New Mexico, which seeks to find innovative ways to build fire adapted communities and landscapes by increasing implementation of prescribed fire on private and public land, creating training and education opportunities, increasing collaboration, and broadening the definition of fire management. This position supports programs including the All Hands All Lands Burn Network and the Forest Stewards Youth Corps Fire and Fuels Crews, in addition to other existing programs and landscapes across the region.
This position spans both field and office responsibilities including planning, coordinating, and providing logistical support for and implementing prescribed burns led by the Guild, supporting partner burn efforts, and supervising field-based prescribed fire crews. This position will also support wildland and prescribed fire training including NWCG classes. This job will work to create a social and political environment that supports prescribed fire by supporting outreach and education efforts.
The position will work across jurisdictions with diverse partners to apply ecologically appropriate prescribed fire and fuels treatments that lead to resilient forests, watersheds, and communities. The Project Coordinator will provide planning and logistical support to ensure project completion.

The Western Iowa Assistant Land Steward performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management, under the direction of the Western Iowa Land Steward. Tasks include maintenance of preserve infrastructure, tools, and power equipment, invasive species control, preserve and easement monitoring, prescribed fire, and assisting with the bison herd at Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve in Westfield, Iowa. This position assists with public outreach and answering visitors’ questions. The Assistant Land Steward assists with training and directing seasonal employees, interns, and may lead volunteer workdays. Work entails overnight or longer travel to preserves in Western Iowa and occasionally to other locations in the region. Irregular hours, including nights and weekends may be occasionally required. This is a full-time, year-round position.

Drawing on his extensive experience in prescribed fire training and PBA development, John will share examples from across the Great Plains that demonstrate how PBAs reduce barriers to burning, build local capacity, and make prescribed fire a practical and effective land management tool.
John’s bio: John Weir is a senior extension specialist in the Natural Resource Ecology and Management Department at Oklahoma State University. He has teaching, research, and extension responsibilities. John teaches two prescribed fire courses and conducts fire ecology research across the Great Plains, focusing primarily on burning timing, fire effects, and patch-burn grazing. His extension responsibilities relate to prescribed fire training and prescribed burn associations. He teaches national and state NRCS prescribed fire courses, trains the US Army Corps of Engineers, and conducts numerous training programs for private landowners. His main passion is working with and forming prescribed burn associations. He has assisted in the formation of over 70 PBAs in OK, TX, CO, KS, NE, CA, NC, FL, SD, and MS. In the past 35 years, John has conducted over 1,500 prescribed burns in ten states and Canada.
