March 13 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Where: Shaw Nature Reserve, Manor House Ln, Gray Summit, MO 63039
When: Friday March 13, 8:00am-4:00pm
Who: Staff/students of natural resources agencies, organizations, and universities (PF/QF, Shaw Nature Reserve, NWTF, NDA, NRCS, MDC, State Parks, county parks, TNC, Student Association for Fire Ecology, conservation contractors, etc.)
Register: https://bit.ly/SpotFire-Partner2026
Why: When prescribed fire is planned and conducted responsibly, the chance of fire getting outside the designated burn unit is low, however, the chance is still present. In this training we will spend the morning in the classroom discussing the aspects of planning, preparing, and implementing prescribed burns that reduce the chance of fire getting outside the burn unit. We will then take to the field in the afternoon to demonstrate the response to fire outside the burn unit and use prescribed burn equipment to suppress and extinguish the fire. Participants will have the opportunity to work with a crew to gain hands-on experience. The field exercise will be in a prepared and controlled location with participant and public safety the utmost priority.
Participants must meet their agency/organization’s requirements regarding prescribed fire PPE. At a minimum, participants must bring and wear in the field flame-resistant (e.g., Nomex, Tecasafe) pants and long-sleeved shirt, leather boots, leather gloves, eye and ear protection, and a helmet. Use the registration site to let me know what you may be lacking. Bring a water bottle to be easily carried in the field. We will have drinking water coolers in the field for refilling. We will provide pizza for lunch.
This will be a live fire event so the weather may cause us to postpone. If we do, you will be notified by email on Thursday March 12 at noon. Backup date is Friday March 27
Registration is required at https://bit.ly/SpotFire-Partner2026. Training will be capped at 30 participants.
