Learn to Prep Workshop
Saturday will be spent learning about the various methods of prep in both grass fields, in the woods, and around structures and the best practices for implementing them! Bonus content: Defensible Space Practices for Structures!
We’ll demonstrate:
- Mower Lines
- Blower Lines
- Disk Lines (good and not so good!)
- Prepping Around Structures
- Blacklining (burning out an area ahead of time to deepen control lines – if weather permits)
Spot Fire Workshop
Sunday will be the exciting live fire Spot Fire Suppression course, as seen at Shaw Nature Reserve and Collins this past spring.
Participants will learn:
- Safety on the Fireline
- The Wildland Fire Triangle: Fuels, Weather, Topography/Review of Basic Fire Behavior
- Spot Fire Size-Up and Communication, Requesting Assistance
- Proper Use of Hand Tools, Leaf Blowers, and Backpack Pumps in Fire Suppression
- “Direct Attack” Suppression Strategies
- Putting it all Together: LIVE FIRE, participants will fight “spot fires” lit and supervised by cadre within the burn unit we prepped Saturday!
As these are LIVE FIRE events, participants will need to bring & wear:
- Leather boots (leather hiking or work boots are ideal)
- Long pants – NATURAL (cotton/denim) or FLAME-RESISTANT (Nomex, etc) fibers ONLY!
- Long sleeve shirt – NATURAL or FLAME-RESISTANT fibers ONLY!
- Leather work gloves (preferably mid-heavy duty) – NO “mechanix”-type gloves!
Eye protection (safety glasses/goggles) is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! Keeping smoke/embers out of your eyes is a good thing – a couple pair of safety glasses will be available to borrow.
